The Pursuit Of Wellness....

If you'd have asked me about 'wellness' two years ago I would have thought it was to do with making sure I popped a vitamin every few days and avoided catching winter colds. So absolutely, wellness for me meant not ill. However much has changed over the past two years and now I see, as is often the way, that genuine wellness has more meaning. It is the absence of illness or disease of course, but it is so much more than that.

I have had this little life journey you see, where I have stood on the edge of the pool of wellness and saw that I could jump in and swim there, but some things were, and frankly still are, prohibiting me. For a long time I knew I was too busy, had too little time, was pushing myself too hard. Not so much with physical demands but mainly with mental demands. I was holding down a fairly senior corporate job in a large company, I had two young children (I still do, but they don't seem quite so young anymore!), a busy social life, my husband worked every hour God sent (still does; I guess I'm more used to it now). I went from being a pensive, flighty 25 year old girl, to being a 30 year old married, working mother of two with more responsibility than I knew what to do with. And it was from there that my wellness started to fall out of my reach.

What I mean is wellness in myself; being in a sound place mentally but also vitally. I was no longer vital. I was wired and over-worked. Tired and resentful (there, I said it; this is the biggest secret held by working mothers; the resentment that you have to do it all on your own). Wellness became like the elixir of life to me - I would seek it endlessly but was oblivious to the fact that I would never achieve it, living the way I did. I would read articles and devour life plans, diets, goals: top 5 tips to stay healthy. Top 5 tips to stay sane. Top 5 tips to get through your 'to do' list. I became faddish and slavish in my pursuit of wellness, although the thing itself alluded me. And the oddity is: I never knew how much until now.

What eventually gave me wellness? I had to stop. It was as simple as that. A raft of other things conspired in a way that begrudgingly but categorically told me, through my body and its complete lack of wellness, that I needed to stop. Halt. Cease. Pause.

And so I did.

And so what does wellness mean to me now?

It means waking up and not panicking about what I have on that day or which child is going where or whether I will be late. It means feeling comfortable in my skin in a way that can only come from slowing down. It means working through any anguish I have about life gradually and deliberately - rather than using stolen moments, when driving my car, to address life's biggest challenges. It means planning and thinking carefully about what I do with my time. It means taking a moment every day to just breathe. It means cooking from scratch and actually tasting the food. It means taking more care of my body, using and strengthening my muscles. But most of all it has meant that I have stopped taking tomorrow for granted. Tomorrow will arrive, but it might not look the way I thought it would. Being able to flex my whole attitude to life has given me wellness.

And whilst wellness, a bit like happiness, is unlikely to be a constant state; it no longer seems so out of my reach. I have a much better chance of swimming in that pool now, instead of just standing on the side wondering why I can't even get my toes wet!

Friday Fabulousness : The Littlest Things

Hello again...I'm lucky enough to be posting for Simone for the second time this week. Told you guys that we are besties :-) And today is even more special as I get to take part in Simone's trademark blog post. The Friday Fabulousness post. A post which always seems to make my mind wander off to so many different fabulous places...I just seem to get lost in all the dreams in my head. That's what I love so so much about these weekly posts. So here is my go at it...I've probably picked all these photos up from Simone herself haha as I seem to save every single photo that she posts.

So hopefully you let your mind wander off to your dreams too...

Please get in my closet....ASAP.

breakfast in bed...the ultimate way to start the day.

I definitely want to try this.

I am so looking forward to wearing cozy little jumpers.

Have a fabulous weekend,

lots of love Sophie xx

Tell Me Something : The Littlest Things

Hey, I'm Sophie from The Littlest Things. I am a serious long-time reader of Simone's blog. I think her blog was the first blog which I stumbled upon. Since then we have become the best of blog friends and I think of her as being my UK mum. She is so lovely! So, I am extremely happy to be guest posting for her today.

Town or Country?
I'm definitely a town/city girl. But the idea of escaping to the country is so magical. I need to make it happen more often!

Music or Books?
It definitely used to be music. But now I think it's a tie between the two. I have so many books I want and need to read but everytime I get to the bookshop I always forget which ones I'm looking for. Think I need to ask Simone for a list haha.

Perfect day - shopping/spa or doing absolutely nothing?
Shopping and Spa would is my idea of the best day ever.

London, Paris, New York or Sydney?

 Sydney...all the way! It has to be the most amazing city, with the most incredible beaches on your door step. But after that it's New York. Only because I haven't visited it yet.

Bread or Cake?

Cake, cake, cake, cake, cake....CAKEE!!

McDreamy or McSteamy?
McDreamy all the way. So beautiful and sexy. I have a major crush on him haha.

Romantic Hero or Action Hero?
It would have to be a bit of a mixture.

Prince William or Prince Harry?
Prince William.

Catherine or Pippa?
 Catherine for sure. She has to be the most beautiful person in the world.

Heels or favourite winter boots?

This is a toughy...I would have to say heels. Probably only because you don't really need proper winter boots in Sydney.

French chic or Italian sex appeal?
French chic. Italian sex appeal has to be done perfectly otherwise it's a bit Euro-trash.

Chocolate or Coffee?
This one is way too tough. I actually can't call it

Great shoes or gorgeous underwear?
It has to be great shoes. But if it were between shoes and bags then I wouldn't be able to choose between them either.

Pedicure, manicure or massage?
Ohh it's a tough one between pedicure and massage. I think it has to be massage.

Talk it out or keep it to yourself?
Definitely talk it out. I can never keep anything which is worrying me to myself. People know straight away when I'm not myself.

Karaoke - first to sing, last to sing or absolutely-no-way-not-ever?
Haha definitely depends on how many drinks I have had before the idea of Karaoke comes up. I would probably be the second to get up and sing. Always have to let someone go before me.

1. One beauty product or routine that you would recommend or can't live without? I have never had the discipline or the patience to get into a proper beauty routine. But when living in Australia, the beauty product which I would recommend the most is sun cream, sun cream and more sun cream. And drinking lots of water. But everyone says that don't they.

2. One book you would recommend to anyone or that you love and often return to? Either A Thousand Splendid Suns or The Kite Runner, written by the same author. I loved those books so much.

3. One item that you would take to a desert island (can't be a person!)? Probably a pen and paper to write all my thoughts down. (I cheated a bit as that's two items...oops).

4. One life-changing moment? Meeting my boyfriend, George. If I hadn't met him then I doubt I would be living in the U.K right now. And that is majorly life-changing, since I'm all the way on the other side of the world. :)

5. One movie that makes you cry every time? So many do but I would have to say Mamma Mia. Especially the part when they sing "Slipping through my fingers".

6. Who would play the handsome hero in the movie of your life?
Either Jake Gyllenhaal or Bradley Cooper.

7. How long have you known your oldest friend? I've known them since I was 2. So it's been 20 years!

8. Your favourite book/movie/song? Favourite book is A Thousand Splendid Suns (but that's not including the Harry Potter series), favourite movie is Notting Hill and favourite song is probably anything by Angus & Julia Stone.

9. Three dream cities you have yet to visit?
New York, Berlin, Stockholm.

10. Three things still on your bucket list? Learn to speak another language, climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge, take cooking or photography classes (or both).

11. School days - happy or sad, good or bad memories?
(playing basketball for my school)
Overall...happy and good memories. There are always a few teenage dramas.

12.  What - or who - always makes you feel better on those more challenging days? My mum - hands down! And George of course.

13. Recommend a blog to us? Fash-n-Chips. Christine takes some beautiful photos and has inspiring style.

14. Happier now than you were at 20....honestly?! 20 was not too long ago for me. I feel very much the same person. But I do feel happier than 2 years ago. I started a blog within the 2 years and it makes me so happy.

Please describe yourself in ONE WORD ONLY :) Optimistic.

Friday Fabulousness: Guest Post by Trish

Happy Friday, Dearest Readers!

I'm Trish from Pink Preppy Lilly Lover, bringing you Friday Fabulousness on behalf of Simone.  I am thrilled to be here, am grateful to be among so many talented ladies that have been guest posting here at The Bottom of the Ironing Basket!

Simone and I have yet to meet in person,
(though I lived in London for a year while studying at the London College of Fashion)
but she and I share a passion for many of the same things in life...
Our beloved family and friends;
Fine wines, and cocktails shared with girlfriends;
All things feminine, ruffly, and sophisticated;

Beautiful photography;
A sunset shared with a loved one;
George Clooney;
and as much time on the beach as one can possibly spend!

Here is my little tribute to Simone, and everything that is Fabulous this Friday...Enjoy!

I can't wait to hear about the exquisite things she's seen on her trip;
perhaps pails full of the most gorgeous roses, in bold and beautiful colors...

A lovely stroll through a garden,
and of course taking the opportunity to look for beauty in everything...

Time for a little dancing on the beach,
 feeling sand between her toes, and the gentle breeze in her hair...

Lounging poolside, with a big hat and a stack of books,
and preferably a handsome cabana boy to bring her the chilled beverage of her choice!

Magical sunsets surrounded by loved ones,

Perhaps a little overindulging in sweet treats,

And time for dressing up, and hitting the town for a day of shopping!

End your fabulous day with a little glamorous nightlife...
Cocktails and jazz; C'est parfait!

Simone, I hope you are enjoying every moment of your amazing trip to France.
We miss you very much and can't wait to hear all about it when you get home!

Thanks again for having me today;
Wishing you each an absolutely lovely weekend ahead!

With love,
xoxo
