....My nine year old daughter is going through some challenging times at school right now....
....in her class are some real little madams/divas challenging personalities who are determined to make everyones lives as difficult as possible and who have created quite a stir....
My daughter is a quiet and sensitive soul, a follower and not a leader, someone who avoids conflict and just wants everyone to get along....
....most of the recent really horrible behaviour has, thankfully, not been directed at her....
....but she has been a witness to a great deal of it and I can tell it has shocked and confused her....
It is hard explaining to children why people - particularly other children of the same age - suddenly start behave differently from one day to the next....being mean, manipulative and downright nasty....
....actions that make no sense to anybody and benefit nobody....children who they thought were friends seemingly having changed overnight....
....I can't explain their meanness myself....it's been difficult, unpleasant and sad....
....what I can do though is reinforce the values of kindness, trust, honesty, loyalty and friendship and reiterate how important they are....without these things you have nothing....
....and it doesn't matter whether you are 9 or 90....
....we all may have days when we are cross, frustrated, fed-up or just grumpy....
....but there are certain lines you don't cross with your friends. Full stop. Period.
When you are in a playground full of children, it's hard sometimes to stand away from a situation or to stand up to bad behaviour....you want to fit in but you also know when something is just not acceptable....
....it's such a painful lesson to learn....it starts young and sometimes it takes a long time....
....sometimes it is hard to know how children are affected but I think all you can do sometimes is emphasise what is good and what isn't....what is acceptable and what just isn't....
It's hard to see your own children going through these times though....even though you know they have to....
....when you just want to rush in and fight the battles for them....
....(and knock a few of those heads together)....
....is it end of term yet??!! Almost :)
Anyway....on to lighter matters :)
